Six of Pentacles upright meaning

The Six of Pentacles is the card of balanced exchange. Waite lists presents, gifts and gratification, as well as attention and vigilance, and the sense that now is the accepted time, when present prosperity can be put to use. A person with means shares fairly with those in need, and the scales stress that this is measured, thoughtful giving rather than impulse. The card applies equally if you are the one receiving: support offered in good faith, a loan, a fair wage or mentoring. Six is the number of harmony, and the Moon in Taurus ties it to flow and sustenance. It asks you to consider the relationship between generosity and dignity, and to remember Waite's caution that the present must not be relied on.

Six of Pentacles reversed meaning

Reversed, the Six of Pentacles points to imbalance in giving and receiving. Waite names desire, cupidity, envy, jealousy and illusion. Generosity may come with strings attached, charity can serve the giver's pride, or one side keeps taking without return. Debt, unequal deals and resentment over who owes what are common signs. It can also show the opposite problem: a person who refuses to accept help, or who gives so freely that they are drained. Examine the terms of your exchanges, name the expectations behind them, and aim for fairness that respects both sides.

Advice

Upright. Give what you can afford and accept help with grace. Keep the exchange fair and the intention clean.

Reversed. Look at who gives, who takes and what is expected in return. Rebalance the exchange before resentment grows.

Symbolism

A prosperous merchant in a rich robe holds a pair of scales in one hand and places coins in the open palm of a kneeling beggar with the other. A second beggar waits behind. Above, six pentacles are arranged in the air, two of them gathering at the scale, a sign of what he has and what he shares. The scales indicate that the giving is weighed and fair, and the difference in height shows the unequal footing of giver and receiver. The card reflects generosity as both a testimony to the giver's success and an exchange that carries responsibility.
